What is Coptionary?
« on: 25 June , 2009, 03:49:48 am »
Nofri
Coptionary is a Wiktionary (i.e. a Wiki type of dictionary) for the Coptic language, where users can search words and find their meaning,  find synonymous, or different spelling for different dialects.
The use of Coptionary will be open for public, but to edit you have to register. This is why we hosted the wiki locally at this website instead of hosting it in Wiktionary (which is a hassle in itself)
The reason we decided that only registered users can create/edit pages is that we want to insure a certain level of quality in the wiki, we can insure it by moderation (which requires a lot of work and dedication) or by registering only trusted users.
If you want to add material to the wiki, please reply to this thread and Admin will create you a user name and a password.
In Christ.

My beloved friends. I want to participate with you in the Coptionary dictionary. Can you add and register me that I may participate and add words to your Coptionary dictionary? May God bless our language. Thank you.

If you want to add material to the wiki, please reply to this thread and Admin will create you a user name and a password.

Please send me a user ID and password for the Coptionary Wiki and advise me on the best length for scriptural examples.

I understand your point that the Coptic and English translations will need to match precisely.

In the case of scriptural references should the entire verse be quoted (with its translation)?

Please advise.

should you provide the complete verse? You don't have to give the complete verse (as long as the part you mention is enough to clarify the meaning of word)

as for your username/password, please give me a day or two
I need to do some cleanup to the wiki first, before you start contributing
Thanks for your interest and your patience, I will send you an email (to the address you register here with)  as soon as I get your account ready

I think it is a good idea too... As far as I know,  nothing like this exists,  and it would be very useful.

I am a total beginner at Coptic but would love to help this project,  even if I only added words as I learned them and listed their source and have an example.

If you revive the wiki I will do my best. Right now the link is broken.

Great, I am ready to edit!

I found a few issues already, however.

1. How do you create a page easily? Right now I can only figure out how to create a new page by editing an existing page. This is a problem because of 2.

2. When I try to edit an existing page, I cannot. The wiki returns this error:

Quote
Database error
A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)
from within function "Revision::insertOn". MySQL returned error "1048: Column 'old_text' cannot be null (localhost)".

I searched this and it seems the Wiki needs to be updated? Here is the link:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Project:Support_desk/Error_migrating_mediawiki_built_with_php5.2_to_server_with_php5.3

But I think that the owner of the Wiki must do this.

Thanks!
