Displaying the examples of a specific word in the wiki page
« on: 10 October , 2009, 08:35:21 pm »
for each word in the dictionary, we should include some examples to show how this word can be used
We need to provide at least one example for each meaning/use of this word
and since our dictionary covers all Coptic dialects, then each meaning of the word must have an example for each Cotpic dialect

so if we have a word with 3 different meanings, and we have 6 Coptic dialects
then total number of examples will be 6 * 3 = 18 example
some people suggest that including all of this number of examples will make the page a mess
others believe that including them is important and very helpful to the readers
so here is the suggestions we've got so far

1st Opinion
Don't write any examples at all, users should find the examples themselves
Pros: Well organized/Good Looking page
Cons: Users will need to search some where else to find examples

2nd Opinion
write 1 example for each dialect for each meaning of the word
Pros: User will be able to see at least one example
Cons: One example might not be enough + page is not very tidy

3ed Opinion
Don't write any examples at all in the word's page, instead all examples should be written in an independent pages (page for each dialect) and place link to them in the the word's page
Pros: each user will be able to open the page with examples related to his dialect + main entry age remains tidy
Cons: user will need to open another page to view the examples instead of looking at it directly in the word's page

4th Opinion
Opinion 4 is a mix between Opinion 2 and 3
It suggests that we write 1 example for each dialect for each meaning of the word in the word's page AND provide independent pages that includes more examples
Pros: user can see at least one example quickly without having to open another page
Cons: Page not very tidy

Others
If you have another Opinion

i think, better is fulltext search of texts - on dictionary is much work, after finishing it, we can add examples, greek ekvivalents, links to dictionaries and much more. but for now, to add eamples to every word will mare work slow.

so are you suggesting we include a couple of examples on the main page then link to more, or just no examples at all?

take a look at this entry (http://danacbe.com/Wiki/index.php/ⲁⲓⲁⲓ), for example.. do you think it's too crowded with the examples? I feel it's useful to have something right there for the users to see how the word is used. Then maybe more can be added later :/ i actually really like your idea of linking to fulltext examples and think it would be very helpful to do that!

we must first take care of something
1. some words have more than one meaning so we must give example for every meaning
2. these examples must be documented I mean it must have source like example from the bible or any well known grammatical book or any coptic text or manuscript
3. we must add the reference of every word or example we got

Finally, I think we must add example as most as we can to illustrate the meaning
Some words have alternative word with the same meaning such as: [ CAWON = to know AMI = to know ] I am sure their is slight difference between these two words so if we have enough examples we can figure out the difference.

1. some words have more than one meaning so we must give example for every meaning
So we felt that adding words in separate pages makes sense if they have different entries in Crum, even if they have the same spelling. Generally words grouped within an entry in crum are pretty close in meaning. IF you have suggestions or ideas, do feel free to share!

2. these examples must be documented I mean it must have source like example from the bible or any well known grammatical book or any coptic text or manuscript
3. we must add the reference of every word or example we got
So far all the examples that have been put in are from the bible, so the verse number is recorded.

Some words have alternative word with the same meaning such as: [ CAWON = to know AMI = to know ] I am sure their is slight difference between these two words so if we have enough examples we can figure out the difference.
this would fall under similar or related words... which i guess we haven't really discussed the process of identifying yet, but should be developed further as the coptionary grows :)

so it seems you are a proponent of many examples?

I suggest that maybe you should make sample pages, one for each opinion.

I think that a webpage is flexible enough to have examples and still be presentable. It's just a matter of organization. Maybe after you make that demo page, and receive enough feedback, you'd be able to come up with a design that fits all the needs, wether it is academic contents or tidyness.

Hello!

I don't understand what is the problem of independent pages? Way of technical support is not as serious matter as examplical support. Please, excuse me my English.

I could create account for any one who have made at least two posts on our forum
but please don't add new words or modify existing ones until we finish this poll
after that a document will be created to explain how everything should be organized
please check the other topics about coptic dictionary, and give your opinions

Admin, I mean, why could'nt you make a couple of examples and why a reader would'nt be able to try to view an information needed by him on independent page? May be, there would be examples only for uncertain meanings, i.e. verb оеiш [oysh] 'to shout' (Sahidic) needs no examples of its basic meaning, but needs an example or link to ташеоеiш (I study with Russian edition of W. Till's "Grammary of Coptic language" with extracted W. Westendorf's lexicon). Excuse me, my English is...
