Translation of Modernisms

(1/1)

CЄTMOCЄ:
Dear Copts and Coptophiles!

How do we translate things into Coptic which haven't existed in former times, but are now part of every modern literary tongue.
If Copts didn't have their owns words, they borrowed from Greek and, later, since the Arab conquest of Egypt, from Arabic.
Let's start with countries. I think, Russia is an easy example because the spelling from Greek is quite the same as if we borrow the word from Arabic:  ⲣⲱⲥⲓⲁ.

But what about France? In (both Ancient and Modern!) Greek, France is called ⲅⲁⲗⲗⲓⲁ ("Gaul", "Gallia"), but if we use the Arabic expression, we come to ϥⲁⲣⲁⲛⲥⲁ or, maybe "better" Coptic, ϥⲣⲁⲛⲥⲁ.

Austria: ⲁⲩⲥⲧⲣⲓⲁ or ⲁⲛⲛⲉⲙⲥⲁ ?
Brazil: ⲃⲣⲁⲍⲓⲗⲓⲁ or ⲁⲗⲃⲁⲣⲁⲍⲓⲗ ?
China: ⲕⲓⲛⲁ or ⲁⲥⲥⲓⲛ [Coptic usually borrowed the Arabic words with article, so it would be more "original" to say ⲁⲥⲥⲓⲛ than ⲥⲓⲛ]
Germany: ⲅⲉⲣⲙⲁⲛⲓⲁ or ⲁⲗⲙⲁⲛⲓⲁ

For some countries, we now how it is called: ϩⲉⲗⲗⲁⲥ instead of ⲁⲗⲓⲟⲩⲛⲁⲛ. So should we use the Greek sources or not?

And how would you call "computer", "theater", "television" or "mobile phone" in Coptic?

Admin:
Hi,
There should be some kind of organization that define Coptic standards. We don't have such organization and so there is no standards really.
I'd write it closer to Arabic. don't however put two constants together like ϥⲣⲁⲛⲥⲁ because its not common in Coptic.

CЄTMOCЄ:
Do you say ⲉⲗⲗⲁⲥ or ϩⲉⲗⲗⲁⲥ in Bohairic?

You really think it's not common to put two consonants together in Coptic? I think it's pretty common, but in Arabic it is not.
The reason why today many Copts can't speak two consonants together is because of the influence of Arabic.

Admin:
What is
--- Quote ---ⲉⲗⲗⲁⲥ or ϩⲉⲗⲗⲁⲥ
--- End quote ---
?
It doesn't even look like  a Coptic word  (most likely Greek?)

As for Germany, Brazil & Australia; I'd follow the old tradition of borrowing from their Greek names
As for new terminology https://sites.google.com/site/pisakho/newwordlexicon This link offers some new words. I also added a few words, that have been forming overtime across different groups. The main references that I would recommend are:
01. Assulam Akkabir, Ibn Kabbar
02. The curricula of Kami, Saji & Smou Abnoudi by Dr Emile Maher Ishak (Fr Shenouda Maher Ishak); this is one of the most reliable wells studied new words. However, I have to stress out, that in honour of his work. It should always be pronounced in Old Bohairic pronunciation, I guess this is the main condition to using these words
03. Pisakho: coined some words for new terminology, with adequate explanation to derivation
04. RemEnKimi@yahoogroups.com words that were formed as necessity required during email correspondence.
