Eternity and Aging
« on: 03 May , 2010, 12:03:45 AM »
Hi everyone, I'm trying recently to learn a bit of Coptic language, and I would like to know how to write "Eternity and Aging" in Coptic. After researches through lexicons and other websites, I have two propositions, and that would be great if someone could correct it - or add another suggestion. The purpose of my research is to use this as the name of a cd, so the shortest the words are, the better it is.

Thank you for your answers. (The translations are attached as pictures)

 julien.

I'd like to add that when I say "Eternity", it could be also a kind of "Forever", even maybe "Immortal". For "Aging", it could be "To become ripe" as well as "Getting old"...

ⲉⲛⲉϩ [anah] means ever
ϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ [sha anah] forever (literally to ever or until ever)
and the noun ⲡⲓϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ [bisha anah] can mean eternal
an example from old Coptic text is
Ⲫϯ ⲡⲓⲛⲓϣϯ ⲡⲓϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ which means
God the great the eternal
Immortal would mean ⲁⲑ-ⲙⲟⲩ [at-mou] (without death) in Coptic
for Aging there is the ancient word ⲁⲓⲁⲓ (which means to grow up)
and there is ⲉⲣ-ϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ (which means "to become old")

Hi, thank you for your answer! Bohairic is fine for me.
So could I say for example :

 ⲡⲓϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ ⲁϩⲁ ⲉⲣ-ϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ

I'm not sure about the "and", I met several forms on the internet, depending of the sentence.

Thank you again for your help.

there is only two "and" in Coptic
ⲟⲩⲟϩ and ⲛⲉⲙ
you use ⲛⲉⲙ when you want to link "names" together
for example
ϧⲉⲛ ⲫⲣⲁⲛ ˋⲙⲫⲓⲱⲧ ⲛⲉⲙ ˋⲡϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡⲓⲡⲛⲉⲩⲙⲁ ⲉⲑⲟⲩⲁⲃ
in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit
ⲛⲉⲙ is also used to mean "with"
for example ⲁⲓˋⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡⲁϣⲫⲏⲣ [ai e nam bashb(h)ar] (I came with my friend/partner )

your statement is not correct, please tell me what are you trying to say

I'm trying to say "Eternity and Becoming old". But I'm not sure that ⲡⲓϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ would be correct if it means "Eternal". Is it an adjective? Maybe ⲉⲣ-ϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ needs to be conjugate also? What about this form :

 ⲡⲓϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲉⲣ-ϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ

 Thank you for your answers.

becoming old would be ⲡϫⲓⲛⲉⲣϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ
also since ⲡⲓϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ means the eternal then Eternity should be ϯⲙⲉⲧϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ
because ⲡⲓⲛⲓϣϯ "the great" becomes ϯⲙⲉⲧⲛⲓϣϯ "the greatness"
but I don't remember i have ϯⲙⲉⲧϣⲁ ⲉⲛⲉϩ before, so I hope someone could confirm

So could it be ⲙⲉⲧⲁⲑⲙⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡϫⲓⲛⲉⲣϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ? I'm still not sure about what would I choose between "Eternity" and "Immortality". Does ⲙⲉⲧⲁⲑⲙⲟⲩ mean more "without death" or really "immortality"?

I'm also interested in the pronunciation, and the few I know about would make me pronunce it like "metathmoy nem puinerseddo". Is that correct?

Thank you for all your help.

ϯⲙⲉⲧⲁⲑⲙⲟⲩ was mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15 and was translated "imperishable"
so I think this word is better to use

 Hi,

so as a definitive answer, I guess I will choose this way to write it : ϯⲙⲉⲧⲁⲑⲙⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡϫⲓⲛⲉⲣϧⲉⲗⲗⲟ. Does that look correct to you?

 Thank you for your help.

It's to give a name to a cd I recorded. Though it's made of modern way of writing (in an occidental way), it contains traditional middle east instruments and many allusions to ancient egypt, especially its decline. So I thought Coptic language could express this idea...

Maybe the Sahidic would have been a better choice though, but I'm usually more interested in bohairic.
