Unicode fonts with Coptic coverage
« on: 13 June , 2006, 03:44:13 AM »

All these fonts are available from
http://www.travelphrases.info/gallery/Fonts_Coptic.html

I got them to work on both Linux and Windows.

If you use Windows, install the Mozilla Firefox browser, from http://www.mozilla.com/
Mozilla picks the characters from all available fonts, so you can view Webpages if they are written in Unicode Coptic.
http://simos.info/blog/archives/554 is a blog post that is written in Coptic.

How do you put those signs on the letter Alpha ?
what is the Unicode code for those signs ?
The unicode code for Alpha is 2C80

The OpenDocument file (OpenOffice.org 2.0+) that was used to generate the screenshot is at
http://www.simos.info/files/CopticSample-CombiningDiacritics.odt

I know how to type these letters in Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc) when using the GNOME graphical environment.
Other operating systems should have a similar procedure.

In GTK+ applications on Linux you can type Coptic using the codepoint.
For example, for lowercase alfa,
1. keep pressed Ctrl-Shift
2. type 2C81
3. release the Ctrl-Shift keys.
Of course, the font needs to support Coptic so that the character is shown. In Gedit or OpenOffice.org you need to select a suitable font. I think in newer versions of Linux a capable Coptic font will be autoselected. In OpenOffice.org you need to hit the spacebar to get the character shown, as a step 3.

To add combining marks, follow the list shown at
http://www.travelphrases.info/gallery/Test_Coptic.html
which shows the acceptable combining marks for Coptic and their Unicode codepoint value.

For the grave combining mark,
1. keep pressed Ctrl-Shift
2. type 300

For the combining mark to work, you must place the cursor just ahead of the coptic letter (alfa). The combining mark will automatically attach to the letter that is position on its left. You can do the same trick even with english, as a way to add combining marks.

It is evident that the fonts need special editing so that the combining marks are centered well on the letters.

I do not know which Coptic letters are permitted to have combining marks. In Greek, letters like Beta do not get a combining mark. What's the situation in Coptic?

OK I tried this in Open Office under LINUX (KDE)
the SHIFT + CTRL didn't work so I used the Inserted -> Special character from Open Office menu
the inserted characters was some coptic letters and the Character with the unicode "0300"
and here is the result

I just tried and wrote the same text.
I verify that it looks exactly the same on my system.

OK from the begining I was saying that signs is a big problem
Do you have any idea about how to fix the issue ? zzzz
i mean the jenkem is supposed to be ON the letter not INSIDE or above the previous letter

I do not know the exact details to fix this issue.
I know it relates to using fontforge and modifying the font,
both the combining marks but most importandly the Coptic glyphs.

Perhaps Moheb will be more suitable to answer here. He might also need help on this.
For example, an easy task is to create an OpenOffice.org file that contains
all combinations of letters and combining marks, so that when an updated font is created,
you can easily load the file, print it and view the improvements in detail.

In the Greek language, only vowels can accept combining marks.
I see that in Coptic almost all letters accept combining marks?
Is there a list of the Coptic letters that can accept combining marks?

I am not sure if there is a letter or two that we never put jenkem on them
but in general Jenkem can be on any Letter

but the dot above and dot under signs are used on a few  letters, and only used for the old coptic pronunciation that doesn't means they are not important since there many students of this pronounciation.
and many attempts to revive it

I found out last week that there is a software package that enables the proper "stacking" of diacritic marks.
For this to work, you need to have special versions of Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird or OpenOffice.org, and also modify your font so that it provides information on how the stacking should happen.

SIL International is providing this software, and the component that allows stacking is called Graphine.
See

Graphite (Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphite_(SIL)
Graphite article (Newsforge): http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/03/15/1649204
Mozilla software with Graphine: http://sila.mozdev.org/    (links to download packages)

The step that is missing is to edit the existing Unicode Coptic fonts to support the smart tags that will help in the proper stacking of the diacritic marks.

I have seen examples of Latin fonts (i.e. Vietnamese) that stack the marks just fine.

For this to work, you need to have special versions of Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird or OpenOffice.org, and also modify your font so that it provides information on how the stacking should happen.

But the CS (Coptic standard) fonts works fine on FireFox and Thunderbird and OpenOffice
without the need to have special version of them.

Even in case I could use this new technology, it is still useless without requiring the user to download special versions of any software that will use this font.

Also you are talking about openOffice and FireFox , How about M$ Office and IExplorer ?

New Coptic Unicode font now available
« Reply #10 on: 16 July , 2006, 07:54:22 AM »
A new Coptic unicode font is now Available
It works better than the previous, but still it is under development
It has many feathures like converting some Coptic/Greek words into its signs
for example

¡ {oic
¢ marturoc
£ menenca
¥  ,rictoc
¦ Par;enoc
½ Ctauroc
¤  'it se

The font is attached with this reply
Again this is not the final release (I hope) it is stil under development
Many thanks to Donald Mastronarde and the Coptic Church for making this font for us
