Pronunciation
« on: 03 April , 2012, 08:42:32 PM »
Greetings!

I have a few questions about the pronunciation of the Old Bohairic. I've read a few articles and read a lot of posts which discussed Old Bohairic vs Greco-B, but I still have a few questions for my own pronunciation. Could you please be so kind to help me here?

Ιⲏⲥⲟⲩⲥ
Pronounced as /jasous/ or /iesos/, or something else?

How is this letter pronounced?

And this one? Is it like the Arabic alef, or like the Greek alpha? or does it depend on the word?

ⲉⲓ (like in ⲡⲓⲉⲣⲫⲉⲓ)
What about this combination, is it /ej/ (like in εϩⲣⲏⲓ) or /ie/ or something else?

ⲫⲏⲉⲧⲁϥⲑⲁⲙⲓⲟ
/vie-et-af-thamio/ or /bet-af-tamio/ or something else?

ⲡⲓⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ
/bi-e-ho-ou/ or /bi-e-hou/ ?

ⲱⲟⲩ
/a-ou/ or what?

Thanks in advance, and may God bless you and accept your fast.

I am not so good with phonetics transcription
but I will try give u similar words in English

Ιⲏⲥⲟⲩⲥ
Pronounced as Ee-sooos (According to our study in Coptic institute)

How is this letter pronounced?
should be pronounced as short a (as in Arabic word man "who" , or "damm" blood)

Like the Greek alpha, maybe in the past it depended on the word but since we can not distinguish we always pronounce it as greek alpha

ⲉⲓ (like in ⲡⲓⲉⲣⲫⲉⲓ)
(like in εϩⲣⲏⲓ) but the a is much shorter than in ahrai

ⲫⲏⲉⲧⲁϥⲑⲁⲙⲓⲟ
byat-af-tamio (first a is short)

ⲡⲓⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ
/bi-e-hou/ although Georgy Sobhey believes that /bi-e-ho-ou/ is more correct

ⲱⲟⲩ
sometimes /a-ou/ although proper pronunciation should be O wooo

watch this videos, pronunciation is not 100% accurate but should give u idea

Thanks, I have actually watched his videos many times to practice.

And thank you too for your answers, this helps me very much. I know exactly what you mean, because my phonetic transcriptions are also very artificial.

I want to improve my pronunciation and my reading skills, as they are (of course) not great yet, so any help of you is much appreciated.

One more question, what about the letter ? Is it like the Greek gamma or always like the Arabic ghayn?, or does it again depend on the word? When I listened to the youtube-video's you gave, I heard it like it was a ϫ, but I can't imagine that to be correct.

How are these pronounced?
ⲁⲅⲓⲟⲥ
ⲁⲛⲁⲅⲛⲟⲥⲙⲁ (not sure about the spelling)
ⲅⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ

One more question, what about the letter ⲅ? Is it like the Greek gamma or always like the Arabic ghayn?, or does it again depend on the word? When I listened to the youtube-video's you gave, I heard it like it was a ϫ, but I can't imagine that to be correct.

How are these pronounced?
ⲁⲅⲓⲟⲥ Ajioc
ⲁⲛⲁⲅⲛⲟⲥⲙⲁ ana(gh)nosma (not sure about the spelling)
ⲅⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ je (gh)ar  => (this actually Coptic ϫⲉ which means because and sometimes written ⲅⲉ in prayers that is alphabetically sorted )
