What is *nut* in Coptic?
« on: 25 January , 2014, 03:08:30 PM »
Do Coptic-speakers use the greek word KAPYON for nut? Or is there a genuine Egyptian word too?

If there is a genuine word for it, you will find it in crum.

If not in Crum, I doubt you will find it somewhere else.
I also doubt Ancient Egyptians ate nuts otherwise there would be a mention to it in Hieroglyphics, drawing or left in tombs

In my research I haven't found a genuine word for "nut" either.
I do have original words for "beans" :

Ancient Egyptian: pr(i), iwryt, 3ndr (d has _ under it)
Coptic (Bohairic) : an'sh'ipi,  anGipi (species of bean comes from '3ndr')
Coptic: oupw (comes from Ancient Egyptian "iwryt")
Akkadian: púlu (possibly similar to Ancient Egyptian "pr(i)"

In Ancient Phonecian they had a word for 'walnut' = guzím
And in Modern Berber they have a similar word for 'walnut' = '(a)guzim',
Which means it passed from Ancient Phonecian to Modern Berber,
Maybe Egyptian had a similar word if it existed.

Those are the closest words I've been able to find.

Just because English has a general word that cover all kind of nuts doesn't mean Egyptian should have the same.
Even Arabic doesn't seem to have one. the current word in Arabic "Mekasarat" litrally means "broken things"

Maybe you will have a better luck if you search for a specific kind of nuts?
also worth mentioning that nuts in general are not planted in Egypt and so probably not so many text (if any) would mention it

I found several words now which mean *nut* in Coptic; they are all taken from Greek:

ⲕⲁⲣⲩⲛⲏ: in a Fayyumic document
ⲕⲁⲓⲣⲉ: in a Sahidic document
ⲕⲁⲣⲟⲓⲁ: in three Sahidic documents
ⲕⲁⲣⲁⲩ: in a Lycopolitan (Subahmimic) document

Although I used to learn the Sahidic dialect first, I personally use the Bohairic now. As such, I take ⲕⲁⲣⲩⲛⲏ because the Fayyumic is closest to Bohairic.

I use a Coptic dictionary.

https://archive.org/stream/vocabulariumcop01partgoog#page/n429/mode/2up
The book translates nut, nux, as καρια(a variation of καρυον, pl.καρυα) and gives various names of specific nuts.
