The letter “o” in The Gospel of Thomas
(1/1)
Dick Marti:
[Edit]
Thruout my copy of the Gospel of Thomas, there is a letter that
I have not encountered before. It looks like an “o” with a very long
tail to the right, making it look like a “Q”. But I think it may be an
accented o of some sort. For example, in verse 114, the word
“NQoovt” occurs twice and the letter in question is the Q. I can’t find an o like this in any Coptic alphabet online. Can somebody please explain?
ⲡⲓⲙⲟⲩⲓ:
ⲛⲟϥⲣⲓ,
I believe [1] you are talking about the Coptic letter "Hori", of Demotic origin, here. It is pronounced as English letter "H".
Regarding the word of interest: "ϩⲟⲟⲩⲧ", it means a man/male/husband [2] in the Sahidic dialect.
I hope that helped.
ⲟⲩϫⲁⲓ,
ⲡⲓⲙⲟⲩⲓ
