Introducing myself
« on: 05 November , 2024, 12:26:47 PM »
Hi all; a bit of an introduction here, and then some

I publish primarily on (the so-called gospel of) Thomas, and I have created an interlinear translation of it that hyperlinks to online dictionaries and also contains a complete index and Concordance.
But that's Sahidic (and a few dialect forms), so that's not very related to what keeps this forum busy. I'm self-taught in Coptic, fluent in a handful of languages and I read ancient Greek and Latin as well. Unlike most if not all here, I'm no Copt or Egyptian.
I got my Masters degree at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands in Languages and Cultures of Latin America, and have worked in IT ever since - yes, that's par for the course for my generation, just about.
But I do have access to Leiden University Library, so if you have a burning desire for some very rare book then the chances are high that I can help out

While studying Thomas I wandered off into the Nag Hammadi Library, and I also study the New Testament as well as the Christian LXX. As a rule, I read everything from the original manuscripts, of which I know quite a few to find - although the Coptic ones are the smallest collection

Check out my Publication List if you like:

Why have I come here? I am pretty crazy about Coptic, and want to learn its pronunciation - but that would be Sahidic for me, so I'll have to cope, I guess.
Other than that, I think Coptic should become a live language again outside of only churches ...

In related news, the Coptic Dictionary Online just added Demotic as well as hieroglyphs!!!

https://coptic-dictionary.org/entry.py?tla=C5696 for example. The main entry follows Sahidic, but it can be searched in Bohairic as well; for example ⲃⲉⲣⲓ can be found under ⲃⲣⲣⲉ, https://coptic-dictionary.org/entry.py?tla=C516

My main achievement is Thomas, and trying to transliterate the Coptic instead of turning it into some fancy translation that destroys most of what the text says, such as Lambdin's.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot here!

Hi mlinssen,
Thank you for sharing!I find your paper "Interactive Coptic-English translation" very educational.Certainly a very good piece of work.

Regarding dictionary: Is there a possibility that it could be migrated to https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Coptic_lemmas ?

wikitionary is managed by wikimedia same organization behind wikipedia.I feel this would be the safest place because there is a big organization behind  it.
other websites including this very forum, could eventually disappear

I understand, but this is the CDO, and it's not mine.
Pishoy has already incorporated it into his magnificent dictionary, and perhaps will include the Demotic and hieroglyphs as well

And you can mirror your website, like I did with metalogos.org: in essence it's a simple copy and paste
