Discovery at Athribis: 13,000 Inscribed Ostraca
« on: 05 April , 2026, 12:25:54 PM »
The discovered ostraca bear texts written in several languages and different scripts, spanning a period of more than 1000 years. The oldest discovered texts are tax receipts written in Demotic from the 3rd century BCE, while the most recent are pottery labels written in Arabic dating from the 9th and 11th centuries AD.

Between 60 and 75 per cent of the discovered ostraca bear Demotic inscriptions, while 15 to 30 per cent are written in Greek. Between 4 and 5 per cent of the ostraca contain pictorial and geometric designs. Almost 1.5 per cent are written in hieratic script, 0.25 per cent in hieroglyphs, 0.2 per cent in Coptic, and around 0.1 per cent in Arabic.
